The body simply becomes more energy-efficient, making it harder to maintain a calorie deficit over time.

Why the Deficit Shrinks

This adaptive response explains why rapid weight loss often plateaus. If you start a diet with a calculated 500-calorie deficit, but your metabolic rate adapts by slowing down by 300 calories, your actual deficit shrinks to just 200 calories.

If your daily activity decreases because you feel tired and move less, your calorie deficit can disappear entirely. This turns what should be a weight-loss plan into a frustrating maintenance diet.

What the Research Says About Speed

It is worth noting that the research on the optimal rate of weight loss contains some nuance. For instance, a study by Nackers and colleagues in 2010 suggested that moderate to fast initial weight loss can sometimes improve motivation and adherence in the short term.

However, the literature also shows that when rapid weight loss is achieved through extreme, unsustainable restriction, the risk of rapid weight regain is high. Without a structured plan to transition back to maintenance calories, the metabolic slowdown combined with heightened hunger hormones almost guarantees regain.

A Healthy, Flexible Alternative
